Chapter 7: Aunt Ruth’s Line

Aunt Ruth called from Kentucky on a Sunday and put Margaret on the extension without warning.

Margaret’s voice was thinner. She spoke of doctors, of loneliness, of a son who had chosen a wife over blood. I let her finish. Then I said, “You kicked my child while he was still inside Emma. You stole from our accounts. You will not use the telephone as a second basin.” Ruth tried to mediate. I told Ruth mediation required a shared reality. Margaret’s reality still featured Emma as an interloper in a house Margaret did not own. The call ended. Emma, who had heard my half from the sofa, said, “You didn’t fold.” I said folding was a habit I was replacing with locks and ledgers.

Helen drafted a formal letter: no contact except through counsel, no return to the property, a preservation of the financial findings for possible civil claim. I signed. Margaret’s response, through a cousin who styled himself a legal thinker, accused me of elder abuse for “abandonment.” Helen’s reply attached the clinic note and the ATM timestamps. The cousin became less of a thinker.
