Chapter 7: The First Safe Room

The sedan did not return to the city. Roman directed the driver to a private medical facility on the North Shore that the Kane family kept on retainer for situations that required discretion and speed. I was taken in through a side entrance, still wrapped in his jacket, bare feet leaving wet prints on the polished floor. The obstetric team moved with the efficiency of people who had been warned that delay would not be tolerated. Warm fluids, fetal monitoring, treatment for exposure, a soft cap over the raw scalp. No one asked unnecessary questions about how a Kane wife had arrived in this condition. The answers were already visible, and Roman’s presence in the corridor made further inquiry unnecessary.
I kept my hands on my stomach through every check. The baby’s heartbeat remained strong. The cold had not taken her. That single fact was the only one I allowed myself to hold onto while the rest of the night’s damage was catalogued and treated.
