Chapter 8: Hearing

The hearing room was smaller than television had taught me to expect.

Jason arrived in a suit that photographed well and a story about paternal concern. His attorney emphasized optics and the speed of my “attachment” to a public figure. Lena emphasized the decree, the account drainage, the lock change, the message log, and the absence of any evidence that Clara had been harmed by a one-hour flight arrangement between strangers. When the viral photo was projected, it looked like what it was: a tired woman, a sleeping toddler, a man keeping his hands visible on a tray table.

The judge asked few questions and disliked spectacle. Temporary orders remained largely intact. Jason’s requested schedule disruptions were denied. A warning was issued regarding communications that framed social-media noise as legal fact. We left with Clara’s week still workable and my job still possible. Jason’s face held the particular anger of someone who had expected volume to equal weight.

Outside, Lena said the older matter remained a card for motive if he escalated again, not a weapon for entertainment. I texted Marcus a single line that the hearing had not rewritten Clara’s life. He replied that he was glad the tray-table version of events had been the one that stood. No invitation. No overreach. The boundary held, and the boundary was part of why I trusted the record he had offered.
