Chapter 5: Access Revoked

By midnight the practical machinery was moving.
Every household account Emily had been locked out of was restored to her name and mine alone. Every secondary user Margaret, Ashley, and Michael had installed was removed. Corporate cards tied to “family support” were frozen pending audit. The private firm that had compiled the drive delivered a fuller packet before dawn: timestamps, vendor invoices for parties Emily had never attended, and message threads in which Ashley referred to my wife as an obstacle to be managed rather than a person to be respected.

I did not sleep. Emily slept in short stretches, waking to check that I was still in the chair near the bed. Each time I was. The diamond necklace remained unopened on the nightstand like a promise deferred until the house felt like ours again.
In the morning I met Margaret, Ashley, and Michael in the study—not the dining room, which still smelled of a celebration they had hosted without the host. I laid out the terms without theater. Continued contact would be limited and supervised. Financial access was finished. Residence on the estate was finished. Any attempt to contact Emily directly without her consent would be treated as harassment and handled accordingly. Margaret called it cruelty. Ashley called it overreaction. Michael called it a phase. I called it the minimum required to correct what I had allowed by trusting the wrong people with the right woman.
