Chapter 8: Sienna’s Call
Sienna called on Sunday evening. I let it go to voicemail first, then listened to the recording. Her voice carried the particular edge of someone who had been publicly stripped of a future she had already begun spending. She did not ask how I had obtained the marriage certificate. She did not ask about Brooke. She demanded to know whether I had planned the timing to maximize the humiliation, and whether I understood that the board was already speaking about interim management changes. The questions revealed the same hierarchy of concern that had shaped the previous two years: reputation first, corporate position second, the actual bigamy and fraud somewhere further down the list.
I returned the call once. I told her that the box contained only documents and a recording, that every item could be verified independently, and that the timing was the natural result of the wedding date she and Arthur had chosen. I did not offer sympathy. I did not accept the framing of humiliation as my primary objective. The primary objective had been the interruption of a ceremony built on an undissolved marriage and misused employee funds. That objective had been met at 2:17 p.m. the previous day. Everything else was consequence. She hung up when it became clear I would not supply the emotional reaction she needed in order to reposition herself as the principal victim.
