Chapter 2: The Code

The dispatcher’s voice came through the desk phone while Daniel watched Olivia’s face turn pale beneath the harsh station light. He gave their ages, described the stomach pain and drowsiness, and requested urgent medical evaluation without naming a drug he could not identify.

Emma stood beside her sister, one hand pressed between Olivia’s shoulder blades.

“You did the right thing,” Daniel told her.

Emma’s mouth trembled.

“Are we in trouble?”

“No,” he said. “You came for help.”

The words seemed to loosen something in both girls. Olivia began to cry without making a sound. Emma did not. She only gripped the edge of the counter and stared at the sealed envelope.

While the ambulance was on its way, Daniel entered the pharmacy code printed in faded blue along the syringe barrel.

The first search returned a dispensing location.

The second returned a transaction time from earlier that afternoon.

The third opened the prescribing credential attached to the order.

Michael Carter.

Their father.

Daniel checked the station camera timestamp, the incoming call log, and the missing-child notice that had reached dispatch seven minutes earlier. Michael had reported that both girls had “wandered off after refusing their medicine.”

But Emma had just said Olivia was never told what she was swallowing.

The story had already split in two.

Daniel printed the pharmacy record and placed it beside the sealed syringe envelope. Then he added a line to the incident log: CHILDREN REQUESTED PROTECTION BEFORE PARENT ARRIVAL.

Outside, tires hissed across the wet street.

The ambulance was still two blocks away.

A dark SUV turned into the station lot first.
