Chapter 12: Controlled Distance

My parents requested a longer visit once the cast was gone. I gave them ninety minutes on a Sunday afternoon and kept the conditions the same: my apartment, no commentary about the hospital night, no attempts to revise the story into a misunderstanding.

They arrived on time. Mom brought food. Dad brought a careful, subdued version of himself that still watched the room for evidence he was being displaced. They held Lily. They asked about the physical therapy exercises. They did not ask about Nathan. When the ninety minutes ended, they left without the old escalation.

In the hallway, before the door closed, my mother said quietly, “We should have come that night.”

“Yes,” I said. “You should have.”

She nodded once, as if finally accepting that the sentence did not require a defense. Dad said nothing. I closed the door and stood for a moment with my forehead against it, letting the residual tension drain.

Whitney came the following week for another lobby coffee. She did not apologize for our parents again. She asked about Lily’s weight gain and whether the stitches had left a scar. We kept the conversation inside lines that did not require either of us to carry the full weight of the family failure. When we stood to leave, she hesitated.

“I’m glad someone showed up,” she said.

“So am I.”

It was enough for now.
