Chapter 8: The Break

Brandon called Madeline the next afternoon. He put the phone on speaker so I could hear. Her voice began with the familiar mixture of injured dignity and coldness.

“I assume you’ve called to apologize for the scene you made,” she said.

“No,” Brandon answered. “I’ve called to tell you that you are no longer welcome in our home or in Luke’s life. You will not contact him. You will not speak about him to the family as if he doesn’t belong. And you will not come near us.”

There was a long pause.

“You would choose that child over your own mother?”

“I choose my son over anyone who tries to erase him,” Brandon said. “Including you.”

Madeline’s tone sharpened. “You’re going to regret this. Families remember who turns against their own blood.”

“Luke is my blood,” Brandon replied. “That’s the part you never accepted.”

He ended the call without waiting for her response.

For a moment the kitchen was completely silent. Then Brandon sat down heavily and rested his elbows on the table. I placed a hand on his shoulder. He had just severed the central relationship of his childhood for the sake of our child. There was no triumph in the moment—only the hard, necessary clarity of a boundary that should have been drawn years earlier.
