Settlement talks began when the landlord’s delay tactics cost more than the unit.
The number that finally held covered back occupancy value, damaged and missing property, and a portion of the distress that lawyers reduce to categories because categories can be paid. Lena did not perform gratitude for the size of it. She read every page. She asked what the release would prevent her from saying. When the answer was acceptable, she signed with the same care she had once used on installment receipts.

Criminal referral outcomes remained separate and slower. Not every participant faced the same exposure; the system sorted them by role and evidence. What mattered to Lena was practical: the door locked, the credit repair letters were in motion, and no one from the landlord’s office called to suggest she had misunderstood her own life.
Arthur declined a joint press note. He attended one closed meeting at the branch to confirm that the night-deposit routine would continue and that security protocols for after-hours occupancy of the lobby would treat sleeping members of the public as a welfare check first, not a trespass performance. The marble bench stayed. The cardboard cup did not return.
