Chapter 3: The Clip text

The chapel clip did not stay private.
Someone’s guest had recorded despite the programs. The video was shaky, twenty-two seconds long, Lily’s voice clearer than the officiant’s. It moved through group chats, then through quieter corners of the internet where people collected public collapses of perfect men. Rebecca sent a preservation letter. Grant’s team sent takedown requests. Copies multiplied anyway, as copies do when a child says a sentence adults were not ready to hear.
Vanessa’s accounts went silent. Grant’s polished feed stopped posting. His mother called Caroline’s landline by mistake, then my mobile, voice shaking with a mixture of fury and something that might have been shame. “She embarrassed the family,” she said. I answered, “She told the truth in the only room that would have believed him without question.” The call ended.
Noah asked to watch the clip once. I sat with him and let him. When it finished, he said, “Lily sounds like when she told the teacher about the broken crayons. Not scared. Sure.” I held him. Sure was a word I wanted to build a house around.
Rebecca prepared affidavits. Mine. Caroline’s regarding my state and Grant’s messages. A former nanny who had witnessed Lily’s fear before the divorce. The court would not try the entire marriage in an emergency hearing, Rebecca warned, but it would examine whether a six-year-old had been placed under threat regarding custody loss in order to perform at a wedding. That examination alone could shift temporary arrangements.

I slept in fragments. In one dream Lily scattered petals that turned into paper orders. In another, Grant smiled for a camera while her basket fell. I woke to Noah’s breathing in the next bed and the sound of London traffic, and I wrote down every dream detail because Rebecca had said memory was a document if you treated it like one.
Grant’s counsel offered a private conversation. Rebecca refused on my behalf. “He had a private weekend,” she said. “He used it to costume your daughter and coach a lie. We will speak on the record.”
