Chapter 8: School Lines

Lily’s teacher asked for a brief meeting after dismissal.
Nothing was wrong with grades. Lily had asked, twice in one week, whether the office list could change without Mom and Dad knowing. The teacher had answered correctly and wanted us to know the question was still living under the surface.
I thanked her and took the information home without letting it become a new emergency. That night during bedtime I said, “The list at school only changes if Dad and I change it. Aunt Madison can’t change it. Grandma can’t. You’re not going to be picked up by surprise.”
Lily considered this. “What if they come anyway?”
“Then the office calls us and does not release you. That’s the rule they already have in writing.”

She slept closer to the wall that night, back protected. Progress was not linear. We had never expected it to be.
Daniel updated the neighbor on the same language so the after-school backup would not improvise under pressure. The neighbor, a retired nurse with two grandchildren in another state, said, “Understood. No one gets a warm exception.” I could have trusted her with more than a house key after that sentence alone.
