Chapter 1: The Door

While my husband claimed he was away on a business trip, I decided to bring a cake and some fresh pastries to comfort the widow of his closest friend.

But when the front door opened, the greatest lie of my marriage was standing directly in front of me.

I knocked gently, balancing the cake box and pastry bag in my hands.

A scraping sound came from inside, as though someone had quickly pushed a chair away. I assumed Chloe had been resting and was slowly coming to answer the door.

Then the handle turned.

The door opened.

My heart nearly stopped.

The person standing there was not the grieving widow I had expected.

It was my husband.

Julian.

He was supposed to be hundreds of miles away for work.

Instead, he stood frozen in Chloe’s doorway, wearing the same white shirt I had carefully ironed that morning. His collar was crooked, several buttons were undone, and his normally tidy hair looked hastily dishevelled.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The confidence disappeared from his face and was replaced by immediate panic.

“Clara,” he stammered, glancing at the cake before looking back at me. “What are you doing here?”

I remained still.

My eyes moved over his wrinkled shirt before meeting his gaze.

“I came to check on Chloe,” I replied calmly. “Her husband recently passed away, and I thought she might need some company.”

I paused.

“But now I’m more interested in why you are here.”

Julian swallowed hard.

“It’s nothing,” he said, forcing an awkward smile. “Her garbage disposal stopped working. She called because she didn’t know who else could help.”

On any ordinary day, I might have believed him.

But before I could respond, soft footsteps sounded from deeper inside the house.

Then Chloe called out.

“Julian, who’s at the door?”

She slowly appeared in the hallway.

She wore a loose silk nightdress, but that was not what took the breath from my lungs.

It was the unmistakable curve of her pregnant stomach.

I stared at her.

“Chloe,” I whispered. “You’re pregnant.”

She immediately moved behind Julian, as though trying to hide herself.

Then another familiar voice came from the kitchen.

“Julian, help Chloe sit down,” my mother-in-law, Evelyn, called as she entered the hallway carrying a steaming bowl of chicken soup. “She shouldn’t stand for too long. It isn’t good for my grandson.”

She stopped the moment she saw me.

Shock flashed across her face, but it disappeared almost instantly.

Her expression turned cold and defiant.

She placed the soup on a nearby table, folded her arms, and raised her chin.

“Since you’ve already discovered everything,” she said, “there is no reason to keep pretending.”

Her eyes remained fixed on mine.

“The child Chloe is carrying belongs to my son.”

She spoke without the slightest hesitation.

“Our family deserves an heir.”

Then she delivered the sentence that shattered whatever remained of my trust.

“If you cannot give Julian children, another woman will.”

The words echoed through the silent hallway.

Julian said nothing.

Chloe stared at the floor.

And the woman who had once claimed to see me as family stood there defending every part of their betrayal.

For one long moment, I could barely breathe.

I could have screamed.

I could have dropped the cake and broken down.

Instead, I remained completely still.

Because I suddenly understood that this was not a single mistake or a moment of weakness.

It was a carefully constructed lie.

The people I trusted most had built an entire secret life behind my back and expected me to disappear quietly once the truth came out.

What they did not know was that before I walked away, I was about to uncover another secret hidden inside that house.
