Chapter 7: Leave Becomes a File

Administrative leave, in practice, was a locked badge and a calendar that no longer invited his name.

Julian’s counsel sent letters disputing scope, tone, and motive. Irene answered with exhibits. The oversight committee met twice more and did not restore his signing authority. A deputy who had lived inside the actual models continued the strategy work without the theatrical layer Julian had preferred. Clients who asked about continuity received a short, factual reply from Malcolm’s office. None of them asked for Julian by name after the second week.

I spent those days on operating rhythm: product milestones, cash timing, the unglamorous sequence of making a rescued company behave like a solvent one. Northstar’s observers sat in the required meetings and did not perform ownership. They asked for numbers and left with numbers. The floor adjusted. People who had feared layoffs began to fear only ordinary deadlines again. That was the transition I cared about.

At home the last of the items on Julian’s list left in labeled boxes. His counsel confirmed receipt. I changed the locks not as theater but as the end of a shared-access assumption that no longer existed. Divorce papers were drafted at the speed of Massachusetts procedure. I did not language them for injury. I languaged them for separation of assets, timelines, and the absence of shared future residence. The earrings stayed in the box. The blue dress went to the cleaner and then to the back of the closet until the shoulder stopped remembering the champagne table.
