Chapter 7: The Arrest in the Woods

The crunch of boots on frozen snow was the only sound as twelve armed state troopers advanced through the treeline toward the generator shed.

Daniel walked twenty yards behind the shield team, flanked by Officer Miller. Through the falling snow, the dark outline of the concrete root cellar emerged from the hillside. The heavy steel storm door was shut fast, but a faint, rhythmic humming vibrated through the snowbanks—the small space heater running off the underground battery line.

Lieutenant Vance stepped up to the steel door, raised his bullhorn, and shattered the woodland silence.

"Richard Pierce! This is the Michigan State Police! You are surrounded! Unlock the door and step out with your hands empty and visible!"

For nearly two minutes, nothing happened. Only the wind whistled through the pine needles.

Then, the heavy deadbolt turned with a sharp, metallic clack.

The steel door creaked open inches at a time. Richard Pierce stepped out into the floodlights. He was wearing his heavy hunting parka, his face ruddy from the cold, but his posture was still upright, radiating the same arrogant, patriarchal calm he had displayed by the fireplace that morning.

"What is the meaning of this?" Richard demanded, raising a hand to shield his eyes from the spotlights. "You're trespassing on private timber! I had a misunderstanding with my daughter-in-law, that's all!"

"Get on your knees! Hands behind your head!" Vance ordered, three rifles trained on Richard's chest.

"Daniel!" Richard barked, spotting his son through the glare of the tactical lights. "Daniel, tell these men to stand down right now! Your wife is a hysterical woman who doesn't know how to raise a child! I am your father!"

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't look down. He walked forward until he was six feet away from the man who had terrified him his entire life.

"You aren't a father," Daniel said, his voice ringing like iron in the freezing air. "You put lye in my daughter's face cream, Richard. We have the video. We have your journal."

Richard’s arrogant mask faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes widening as the words hit him.

"Daniel—"

"Get on the ground," Daniel interrupted coldly, turning his back on him. "Before they put you down."

As two troopers drove Richard into the snow and clamped heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, Daniel didn't look back once. He walked straight to the command SUV and pulled out his phone to call the hospital.
