Chapter 7: The Scene at Oakmont

The next update arrived at 9:17 a.m. The senior detective reported that Marcus had attempted to frame the morning as a private marital disagreement that had escalated beyond his control. Sylvia had insisted the injuries were self-inflicted during a “dramatic episode.” The third woman present had been identified and separated for a voluntary statement. She confirmed she had been invited to Thanksgiving dinner and that Chloe had still been in the house when she arrived the previous evening. She denied knowledge of any assault. The detectives photographed the hallway, the Persian rug, a torn section of clothing recovered from a bathroom wastebasket, and the coat closet where Chloe’s winter coat still hung unused. Marcus’s phone was logged as a potential source of call records and messages. No one was permitted to resume the meal. The CEO’s arrival had been intercepted at the curb and redirected with a brief official explanation that a police matter was in progress.

I received the information without visible reaction. Chloe was sleeping under the heated blankets. The medical chart already listed the hypothermia, the contusions, the probable concussion, and the clothing damage. Each entry closed another avenue of denial. I added the detective’s summary to my own notes, time-stamped it, and kept the phone face-down on the tray table. The work of the morning was proceeding in the correct order: victim stabilized, scene secured, initial statements taken, physical evidence photographed before it could be altered. Emotion would not improve any of those steps.
