Chapter 7: The Fiancé

Madison’s fiancé, Cole, came to my door on Sunday without Madison.

I kept him on the porch. He stood with his hands in his pockets, the posture of a man sent to soften something he did not fully understand.

“She said this is a misunderstanding about wedding funds,” he began.

“It’s a misunderstanding about whose name was on the card,” I said. “And about ten days of no-shows after I paid for the flights.”

He winced. “They told us you were working long hours. That you preferred space.”

“They lied to you.”

I did not invite him in. I gave him the short version: the alert, the boutique, the caption, the canceled seats, the dispute. I watched his face shift as the story he had been handed failed to fit the receipts.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

“I believe you. That doesn’t make the charges authorized.”

He asked whether I would speak to Madison before the wedding. I said only through writing, and only about restitution, not about roles in a ceremony I had not been asked to join. He nodded, left, and later that night I received a transfer notification for a portion of the bridal deposit from an account that was not my parents’. Cole, at least, had decided the optics of theft were worse than the optics of a delayed veil.

I marked the transfer in the file as partial recovery from a third party and left my parents’ share outstanding on purpose. Some debts needed to remain visible on the correct names.
