Money made the pattern less deniable.
The life insurance increase, the unsigned estate revision Emily had resisted, the quiet movement of funds from a joint account into a vehicle Daniel controlled in the month before her collapse—each item alone could be explained. Together they formed the shape Cole showed prosecutors in a conference room with the blinds closed. Attempted murder was spoken aloud. So was the rarer, uglier theory that a funeral had been intended as the end of evidence.

Daniel denied everything. He cried in a controlled way during one interview and sat dry-eyed in the next. He accused Rosa of inventing a sound to punish a household that had dismissed her opinions. He accused Paige of poisoning Emily against him during hospital visits. He did not accuse the toxicology report, because the numbers did not care about his tone.
Emily was discharged to a rehabilitation facility under a safety plan that excluded Daniel from the premises. Paige took leave from work and slept in a chair that left a permanent ache in her back. Rosa visited twice a week with pureed fruit and silence that did not demand performance. Emily began to walk short distances. The first day she reached the end of the hallway without help, she stopped and said, “He scheduled a funeral.” The sentence hung in the corridor like a second crowbar.
