Chapter 1: The Empty Seats
My husband’s family boycotted our wedding because he was ‘marrying down’ — two years later, my MIL came back with one unexpected request.
The day my husband and I got married, every seat reserved for his family stayed empty.
A week before the wedding, his mother had told him,
"If you marry her, don't expect any of us to be there."
Her reason was simple.
My mother had been a waitress for over thirty years, and my father owned a small auto repair shop.
Meanwhile, my husband's family owned several successful businesses and had always expected him to marry someone from "their world."
Apparently...
I wasn't.
He married me anyway.
We had a beautiful wedding despite the empty seats, and after that, he completely cut ties with his family.
Over the next two years, we bought our first house, talked about having children, and I eventually stopped wondering whether his family would ever accept me.
Then, one rainy Saturday morning, someone knocked on our door.
When I opened it, my mother-in-law was standing there.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Her eyes drifted into the house until they landed on the framed wedding photo hanging in our hallway.
She stared at it for a long moment.
"You still keep it there," she said quietly.
