Chapter 10: Residual Noise
In the months after the decree was entered, the residual noise from Ethan and Linda faded into the background of a closed case.
Ethan attempted one indirect message through a mutual colleague, carefully worded to suggest that time had provided perspective and that a conversation might still be useful for both of us. I declined through the same colleague without offering any additional explanation. The colleague did not press the matter. Linda’s financial difficulties with her mortgage resolved, or failed to resolve, without any further information reaching me. I had stopped functioning as a node in their financial network the night I placed the ring on the counter. Once that connection was severed, the network simply recalculated around the missing support.

I continued in my role at Hartwell Medical Systems without interruption. The Director of Operations position expanded in the ordinary way that roles expand when the person holding them consistently delivers results. I restructured two reporting lines that had been inefficient for years, hired an additional analyst for the logistics team, and began participating in higher-level planning meetings that no longer felt like borrowed authority. The work remained demanding. It also remained clean. Problems arrived with data and deadlines. Solutions were evaluated on effectiveness rather than on emotional leverage.
At home the house settled into a quieter rhythm. I replaced a failing dishwasher, had the hardwood floors refinished in the main living areas, and moved the furniture into arrangements that suited only my preferences. None of these changes were performed as statements. They were simply the practical adjustments of a person living alone in a space that belonged solely to her. I cooked meals that required no negotiation of taste, slept without waiting for late-night negotiations, and woke without calculating how much of my income might be expected to cover someone else’s shortfall.
