Chapter 1: The Iron

My Mother-In-Law Pressed A Hot Iron Against My Pregnant Belly For Carrying A Girl—Then The Front Door Opened And Her Son Saw Everything.

I was folding baby clothes in our Dallas living room when Margaret walked in carrying the ultrasound photo.

She dropped it onto the table.

“Another girl,” she said coldly.

I put one hand over my stomach.

“Your granddaughter is healthy. That’s what matters.”

“Maybe to you.”

I stared at her.

Margaret had complained about my pregnancy for months because Ryan and I were expecting our second daughter.

She wanted a grandson to “carry the family name.”

That afternoon, she became worse than I had ever seen her.

“You’ve failed my son twice.”

“Get out of my house, Margaret.”

She laughed.

“Ryan is in Chicago. Who exactly is going to make me?”

Then she noticed the iron beside the laundry basket.

Before I understood what she was doing, she grabbed it.

“Maybe you need something to remind you what you’ve done to this family.”

I backed away.

“Put that down.”

Margaret stepped closer and pressed the hot iron against the fabric covering my stomach for a terrifying second.

I screamed and shoved it away.

The iron crashed onto the carpet.

“Are you insane?”

May you like

Margaret pointed at me.

“You should have given my son a boy.”
