Chapter 1: The Carpet

My Mother-In-Law Threw My 8-Month-Old Baby Onto The Carpet—Then My Husband Slapped Me For Defending Our Son.

I screamed as Diane dropped my crying son onto the living-room carpet.

Noah was eight months old. The sound he made when his body hit the floor was small and terrified, the kind of cry that cuts straight through every other noise in a house. I was across the room in three steps. I scooped him up, one hand under his head, the other around his back, and held him against my chest while he shook.

“What is wrong with you?”

Diane stood over us with her arms crossed, face tight with irritation rather than concern.

“He wouldn’t stop crying,” she snapped. “Maybe if you were a better mother he wouldn’t be so difficult.”

“Don’t you dare blame my baby.”

She called me useless. She said I spoiled him. She said a real mother would have trained the crying out of him by now. I shouted back. The words came out raw and immediate. Noah’s face was still pressed into my shoulder, his small fists tangled in my shirt, the cry starting to break into exhausted hiccups.

My sister, already in the house for a visit, moved closer without speaking. She understood the temperature in the room better than anyone else present.
