Chapter 7: Bianca text

Bianca requested a conversation the following week.

We met at a neutral café she chose, all pale wood and careful noise. She ordered tea, folded her hands, and said she felt ambushed by the existence of the estate. I let the word sit between us. Ambush implied I had owed her a disclosure on her timeline. I had owed my son honesty when I was ready, not a clearance process through his wife’s sense of order.

“Ethan is under a lot of pressure,” she said. “Family events are complicated.”

“They are less complicated when people are not removed from them without discussion,” I said. “You preferred a Christmas without me. You received one. The house does not change that fact. It only changes whether I continue to organize my generosity around your guest list.”

Her cheeks colored. She was not used to being answered without apology attached. She spoke about Noah’s need for stability, about not wanting wealth to become a wedge, about how sudden assets could distort relationships. I agreed that wealth could distort. I noted that exclusion could too. We left the café with no alliance formed and no disaster declared. Sometimes clarity was the only achievable outcome.
