Chapter 13: Measured Progress

The second week established a thinner but more sustainable rhythm.
Alex attended two further educational assessments and a dental appointment that addressed years of deferred care. He endured each without complaint and without performance of gratitude. Ethan returned to school and began the complicated social task of deciding how much of the new truth to carry into classrooms and friendships. I gave him a simple boundary: the story was not secret, but it was not content for casual distribution. He could answer direct questions from close friends with the basic facts. He did not owe the full history to anyone.

Full unsealing of the original placement records remained pending, but the present-tense legal reality was clear enough to keep Alex housed, insured, and under medical supervision without the constant threat of administrative interruption. I updated my own will and emergency directives so that both boys were named with equal logistical care. The symmetry was deliberate and overdue.
Evenings still carried friction. Ethan wanted a brother in the sense he had absorbed from books and screens. Alex wanted predictability and the right to remain partly opaque. I stopped trying to accelerate affection between them. Affection, if it developed, would have to survive boredom, irritation, and the ordinary unfairness of shared bathrooms. Forced closeness only produced new resentments.
