Chapter 7: Counter-Moves

Julian’s first formal response arrived through a lawyer who specialized in making family disputes look like misunderstandings.
The letter accused Maya of financial mismanagement during my deployment, claimed her signatures were voluntary, and suggested that the bruises were either self-inflicted or the result of an unnamed third party. It demanded the immediate lifting of the freeze and threatened a countersuit for defamation if we continued to “weaponize private medical information against respected family members.”
Patricia read it, made a single annotation in the margin, and filed it behind the medical report and the message logs.
“They’re testing whether you’ll flinch at the word family,” she said. “Don’t.”
We didn’t.
Maya provided a supplemental statement that walked through each appointment in sequence—the first “helpful” visit from Victoria, the gradual isolation from our joint accounts, the evening Julian blocked the study door, the specific language of the threat regarding emergency control of the household. She named the two neighbors who had been fed the instability narrative. Patricia’s investigator interviewed both within forty-eight hours. One recanted immediately and admitted Julian had coached the story. The other refused to speak on record. Both reactions were documented.

Mother attempted a different channel. She called my former CO’s wife, a woman she had met once at a promotion ceremony, and performed concern about my “post-deployment mental state” and the influence of a spouse who was “turning him against his blood.” The CO’s wife called me the same evening. I thanked her, recorded the substance of the conversation, and forwarded it to Patricia. Another exhibit.
At home, Maya slept closer to the center of the bed. She still woke at sudden sounds, but the sounds no longer included Julian’s footsteps in the hall. I kept the chair near the door for another week, then moved back to the mattress when she said, quietly, that she wanted the weight of another person on the same surface again. Progress was measured in inches and hours of uninterrupted sleep. I took both as seriously as any after-action report.
