By the end of the month the investigation had names, timestamps, and a motive that was not only cruelty—it was equity.

Teresa had watched the house’s value rise and decided monthly tribute was not enough. Mason had been the courier. The party had been cover and celebration in advance. Forgery charges advanced. Teresa’s criminal case braided assault on an officer with the property scheme. Civil restraining language kept her off our porch.

I stood in the backyard where the tables had been and hosed down the grass. Amy watched from the doorway with Frederick on her hip, the pendant letter F catching light. Music from a neighbor’s radio drifted over the fence—ordinary, uninvited, harmless.

“I thought if I sent money, I was taking care of everyone,” I said.

“You were taking care of a story she wrote,” Amy answered. “We’re writing a different one.”
