The case resolved without a circus.

A plea. Conditions. No contact with Noah except as any future court might specifically allow—and none was requested by us. Marianne’s record carried what it carried. Our door carried new hardware and an old vigilance that had softened into habit rather than panic.

Noah’s medical chart gained routine pages that buried the toxicology under months of normal care. The dangerous night became a documented event with a date, not a weekly reliving. I still skipped the aisle at the store if I saw pearl earrings that looked too much like hers. That was allowed. Healing was not a straight line toward generosity.

Daniel blocked the last numbers. His sister visited once under our rules and cooed at Noah without carrying messages. The Carter name, in our house, meant the three of us and the boundaries we chose.
