Chapter 15: What Remains

Months later the house had settled into a rhythm that belonged entirely to us.

Elise slept in the nursery my parents had helped prepare. My mother visited most mornings. My father still found small things to fix even when nothing was broken. Aaron exercised his visitation with careful punctuality and little conversation. Gerald and the rest of the family made no further attempts to enter the house or challenge the agreement.

Sometimes, late at night, I still walked through the quiet rooms and remembered the afternoon they had first arrived—Gerald’s casual inspection, Aaron’s outstretched hand, the way my parents had stood frozen behind me while their life’s work was treated as a resource to be divided.

The memory no longer carried the same sharp edge.

It had become a marker of the day I stopped making myself smaller for the sake of peace that was never real.

I stood at the nursery doorway one evening and watched Elise sleep, one small hand curled near her face. The house around us was ordinary and solid and fully ours.

My parents had given me more than walls and a roof.

They had given me a place strong enough to protect the life we were building.

And I had finally become someone capable of keeping it.
