Chapter 9: The Preliminary Finding

On Friday the board’s preliminary review reached its first formal conclusion.
The public conduct at the gala—specifically the physical altercation and the recorded statement directing me to “know my place”—was deemed incompatible with the standards required of a chief executive officer of Vance Technologies. The undisclosed personal relationship with a direct subordinate was flagged as a separate and serious governance concern. Julian’s provisional appointment was formally withdrawn. A longer investigative process would continue regarding potential conflicts of interest and any related misuse of company resources, but the question of the CEO role itself had already been answered.
I received the summary in the same study where I had sat the night of the gala. My father reviewed it with me in silence, then asked only whether I wished to make any additional statement for the record. I did not. The events of the evening, witnessed by five hundred people and preserved in multiple forms, required no further narration from me.
Julian was informed through counsel. Within an hour his attorney requested an emergency discussion regarding severance, public messaging, and the possibility of a negotiated departure that would avoid further damage to his professional reputation. The board’s position remained procedural and cold: the appointment had been withdrawn for cause related to conduct; further terms would be determined at the conclusion of the broader review.
That evening I returned to the house Julian and I had shared for eight years. The rooms still contained the residue of a marriage that had been publicly ended on a marble floor beneath a gold banner. I packed a single suitcase with the documents and personal items I required and left the rest for the formal separation process that would follow. I did not linger. The house had never been the source of the authority Julian misunderstood. The authority had always lived in the trust structures, the approval rights, and the quiet decision to stop granting confidence to a man who had decided I belonged on the floor.
I slept at my father’s residence that night.
The celebration was finished.

The review had delivered its first irreversible result.
And the woman who had been told to remember her place had simply declined to remain in it.
