By winter the group chat had exhausted its adjectives and gone quiet in my direction.
I was not expelled in a dramatic vote. I was simply no longer useful in the old way, and usefulness had been the primary bond. Mother’s birthday messages the following year were handled by Brenda with a smaller venue and a different payer; I received a photo after the fact and a note that I had been missed in a tone that did not request a wire. I liked the photo for the evidence that celebrations could occur without my card. I did not reply with funding.

Emily’s class had a family project about traditions. She wrote about pancakes on Sundays and park afternoons and a purple card that had been honest. She did not write about plants. The teacher put a star on the page. I put the page on the fridge. Noah, watching, asked if he could make another card for Grandma sometime. I said yes, when he wanted to, and that cards were allowed to travel even when money did not.
Ruiz sent a year-end note that no further action had appeared on his side. I paid his small retainer balance and closed the folder. Legal walls were useful. Daily walls were made of declined automatics and chairs that did not require negotiation.
