At work a colleague asked why I had become even quieter in team meetings.
I said I had learned the cost of talking before the file was ready. He nodded as if it were a professional tip. It was also a eulogy.

The agency handling the referral sent periodic notices that meant little in plain English and enough in mine: open, active, no action required from complainant this quarter. I filed them behind the settlement. I did not refresh a browser at midnight hunting for my father’s name. Patience is part of forensic work. So is knowing when you are no longer the operator, only the source.
I dated a man who found the music-box story sobering and did not ask to see the video. When we ended, it was about distance and timing, not about my family’s ledger. Ordinary endings continued to feel like luxury.
