Chapter 5: Empty Guest Room

They left on a Thursday morning with the truck overloaded and the porch clear of shopping boxes.

Savannah did not say goodbye. Derek nodded once, practical. Christopher stood in the driveway and watched the truck turn the corner, then came inside and sat at the kitchen table with his head in his hands.

“I messed this up,” he said.

“You planned this,” I corrected, not unkindly, not softly. “You planned it and hoped my silence would pay the rent.”

He nodded into his palms. I poured coffee for myself and left his hands empty. Reconciliation, if it came, would not be purchased with my immediate labor. The guest room mattress was stripped. The office chair sat under my desk. The pantry shelf was mine again.

Marjorie sent a final note: License terminated. Call if they return. I replied with thanks and walked into the garden.

Eighteen years of peace had not been ignorance. It had been a gift I gave freely. The list at 11:07 p.m. had ended the free season.

Savannah had thought she was hiring a maid in her father’s house.

She had been a temporary occupant in mine—

and the trust,

the photos,

and the letter with a date

had been enough

May you like

to send the suitcases

back out the door
they should never have crossed
without asking.
