Chapter 8: The Emergency Courtroom Showdown

On Monday morning, Courtroom 3B of the Multnomah County Family Court was quiet, cold, and entirely unforgiving.

I sat at the petitioner's table in a tailored navy suit, my posture straight, with Jonathan Hayes seated to my right. Across the aisle, David and Theresa sat with a scrambling, court-appointed legal aid attorney whom David had managed to secure just an hour before the docket opened. David looked unshaven, hollow-eyed, and terrified.

Judge Martha Sterling—a veteran family court judge with zero tolerance for domestic neglect—adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench.

"I have reviewed the petitioner's emergency filings, the medical records from Portland Medical Center, and the accompanying exhibits," Judge Sterling said, her voice cutting through the silent room like ice. "Mr. Cole, your counsel claims this was a 'misunderstanding' regarding a normal newborn ailment. Would you like to explain why your mother confiscated your wife's phone while your three-day-old son was struggling to breathe?"

David stood up on shaky legs. "Your Honor, my wife... she had severe anxiety after the C-section. My mother raised four children, and we genuinely believed she was overreacting. We didn't know—"

"You didn't know?" Judge Sterling interrupted. "Mr. Hayes, play Exhibit A."

Jonathan tapped his laptop. The large monitors on the courtroom walls flickered to life, displaying the timestamped 10:15 AM footage from our living room security camera.

The entire courtroom watched in dead silence as:

* Ethan's ragged, choked gasps echoed over the speakers.

* I begged David to call an ambulance.

* David dismissed me without looking up from his airline confirmation.

* Theresa snatched my phone off the table and pocketed it.

* David opened my purse, took my Chase Visa card, and walked out the door to catch a flight to Key West.

When the video ended, Judge Sterling’s face was stone.

"Mr. Cole," the judge said, her voice dropping to a register that made David flinch. "You stood five feet away from an infant in severe hypoxia, ignored your wife's cries for emergency medical intervention, stripped her of her communication and financial resources, and boarded a flight to a luxury resort."

Theresa tried to speak from the gallery. "We thought she was—"

"Bailiff, if that woman speaks one word, remove her from my courtroom," Judge Sterling snapped. She turned her gaze back to David. "That is not a misunderstanding, Mr. Cole. That is staggering, willful endangerment."
