Chapter 14: The Ordinary Continuation

Seasons moved across the lake road and the easement path without regard for the open file.

I did not return to the hospice. Elena had completed her task; further contact would have served only my need for a living link to the final disclosure, and that need gradually quieted. Relatives learned, in the careful way families learn such things, that the story of Abigail’s disappearance now included a man at the fence line and a grandfather who had kept silent. Some asked questions. Most did not. The information changed nothing about the empty place at the table. It only changed the shape of the history that surrounded the emptiness.

I worked. I maintained the small routines that kept a household functioning. I allowed the calendar to advance without requiring it to deliver resolution as a condition of continuing. The discipline was not dramatic. It was simply the daily decision to live inside the accurate account rather than the kinder one my father had first offered the police and the family. The kinder account had protected him from certain judgments while condemning him to a private sentence he never escaped. The accurate account protected no one. It only stopped the official record from being smaller than the truth.
