Chapter 15: Disposition

A year after the night of the clippers, the matter existed only as a closed file.

The house remained in my name, unencumbered. The repayment schedule from the unauthorized credit line continued without default. The divorce decree sat in a folder in Helen’s office and in a digital copy on my secure personal drive. Ryan and Linda had no further legal avenue into my finances, my property, or my daily life.

I did not seek additional punishment. I did not monitor their circumstances. The objective had never been their suffering. The objective had been the restoration of control over my person, my resources, and my trajectory.

That objective had been met.

On a clear morning in the following spring, I stood outside the headquarters building after an early meeting and watched the installation move through its ordinary routines. The work continued. The rank continued to require the same precision it always had. The personal vulnerability that Ryan and Linda had attempted to exploit no longer existed in any form they could reach.

They had believed a shaved head and a demand for obedience would return me to a smaller life.

Instead, the attempt had produced a clean, documented, and permanent separation from every structure they had used to keep me small.

I adjusted my cover, walked back into the building, and closed the door on the matter for the last time.

The command had the rest of my attention.

It was the only battlefield that still required it.
