Chapter 5: The Guest List text

The guest list became a map of who had lowered their phones and who had not.

Some sent handwritten notes that did not mention hair. Others sent silence that I chose to read as respect rather than absence. A few sent questions disguised as care—had I considered a statement about “the full medical story,” would we “clarify the timeline,” did we need introductions to publicists who specialized in “image repair.” Lena answered those so I would not have to. Her replies were polite and terminal.

Richard Mercer requested a meeting in neutral space. Ethan attended with counsel. I declined. Blood relation to the woman who had exposed me did not obligate me to sit across a table while he practiced pain. He left a message through Ethan: he had frozen joint accounts Vivian used for discretionary spending and had moved out of the master wing into a guest suite “until the house felt honest again.” I did not grade his sentence. I filed it under consequences that belonged to their marriage, not mine.

At night I stood sometimes in the bathroom without a scarf and looked at the same scalp the cathedral had seen. The fear of being seen had already been maximized by someone else’s hand. What remained was the quieter work of inhabiting my own reflection without flinching for an audience that was no longer in the pews. Ethan found me there once and waited in the doorway until I nodded. He did not rush to cover me. Covering, we both understood, was mine to request.
