Chapter 11: The Final Confirmation

After Matthew fell asleep I waited until his breathing deepened into the steady rhythm I knew by heart.

Then I rose, took my private device from its hidden place, and checked the bank accounts one final time. The automatic transfer authorizations remained scheduled for the following morning. The destination accounts were unchanged. The amounts were large enough to drain the primary joint holdings within two business days if allowed to execute. A separate note in the insurance file—one I had photographed earlier but not fully decoded—referenced a secondary beneficiary activation tied to the same date.

The plan was no longer abstract.

Something financial and irreversible was set to begin the moment the anniversary officially ended.

I stood in the dark kitchen with the glow of the screen hidden against my body and felt the last of the old emotional fog burn away. What remained was a cold, precise understanding: Matthew had spent years building a structure that required my trust, my signature, and my continued ignorance. The phone call I had overheard was not a moment of carelessness. It was the confidence of a man who believed the final stage was already secure.

I photographed the confirmation screens, encrypted the new images, and returned the device to its place. Then I went back to bed and lay beside him with my eyes open, listening to the quiet house and the man who had called me the center of his trap since we were teenagers.

Tomorrow the transfers would attempt to move.

I intended to be ready before they did.
