Chapter 3: The Federal Sweep

The moment the ink dried, Nolan practically snatched the folder from my hands. A triumphant, arrogant smile broke across his face. He looked at Celia, who exhaled a sharp breath of relief, her posture instantly relaxing into her usual practiced elegance.
"A wise decision, Major," Nolan said, slipping the folder under his arm. "I'll have our legal team process this immediately. Now, as promised, I suggest you take your leave through the service elevator. Celia will have a car waiting for you in the alley."
I didn't move. I stood my ground, my hands dropping to my sides. The trembling in my fingers had completely vanished.
"I'm not going anywhere, Nolan," I said, my voice dropping its ragged edge, returning to the hard, clear cadence of a commanding officer.
Nolan frowned, irritated. "Elise, don't make this difficult. You signed the paper. It's over."
"You're right," I agreed, looking directly at his expensive silver watch. "It is over. You just committed felony extortion, wire fraud, and conspiracy to embezzle federal charity funds, all recorded on a Class-A federal wire."
Nolan froze. Celia’s eyes widened, darting to my collar, then back to my face.
"What are you talking about?" Celia demanded, her voice rising in panic. "Are you out of your mind?"
I reached up and pressed two fingers against the comms earpiece hidden beneath my pinned-back hair.
"Vance," I said clearly. "Transaction complete. Close the net."
The transition was absolute, terrifying, and completely silent.
The sommelier pouring champagne ten yards away abruptly set the bottle down. He reached beneath his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a gold FBI badge, letting it hang from a chain around his neck.
At the main entrances of the ballroom, four men in tailored suits simultaneously locked the heavy oak doors, standing firmly in front of them with their hands resting on their hips, pushing their jackets back to reveal holstered firearms.
The string quartet, noticing the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere, stumbled over their notes and faded into a disorganized silence. The polite hum of wealthy chatter died, replaced by a wave of confusion and alarm as the federal presence made itself known.
"FBI! Nobody moves!" Special Agent Vance's voice boomed across the ballroom, carrying the undeniable weight of federal authority.
Nolan stumbled backward, dropping his champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot in the quiet room. He looked wildly around, realizing that the waiters, the security guards near the exits, and even the photographer were all federal agents moving into position.
"This is a mistake," Nolan stammered, his face draining of all color. He clutched the white folder to his chest like a shield. "This is a private event! You have no jurisdiction here!"
Agent Vance walked through the crowd of horrified donors, ignoring the panicked questions of a prominent senator. He stopped directly in front of Nolan, flashing his badge.
"Nolan Pierce," Vance said, his voice flat and unforgiving. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, money laundering, and defrauding a charitable trust. Put the folder on the table and put your hands behind your back."
"No!" Celia shrieked, lunging forward, grabbing Nolan's arm. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are? My father will have your badges for this!"
"Actually, Celia," I said, stepping forward, the dust on my uniform suddenly looking like a badge of honor against their crumbling facade. "They are here for him, too."
Across the room, near the podium, Grant Warren had dropped his lowball glass. He was surrounded by three agents, his face a mask of absolute shock as they read him his rights in front of the very donors he had spent ten years lying to.
