Chapter 5: Tessa on the Screen

The screen in the courtroom was ordinary. The young woman on it was not.
Tessa wore a plain dark blouse and sat in an undisclosed room with a neutral wall behind her. She identified herself for the record, confirmed she was appearing voluntarily under a protection arrangement, and looked at the camera as if she could see the empty chair beside me.
She described the week before her disappearance in spare detail. Anomalies in authorization logs. A mirrored message thread that used pieces of our real correspondence and stitched them into instructions she had never written. An approach from an intermediary who offered her a “clean exit” and a cut of the transfer if she played along with a narrative of flight. She had contacted a Defense channel she knew from prior joint work, staged the airport trail to buy time, and left me the one message she thought I would understand without putting her location in a phone the other side might still reach: Do not react to the first blow.
Victor tried to break her with the accountant’s testimony and the token logs. Tessa answered that her token had been cloned during the engineered outage and that the clone’s use did not require her presence. She named the window, the system path, and the internal ticket number that had been closed as routine maintenance. Rachel entered the ticket into the record. Celeste’s jaw tightened once and then went still.

When Tessa finished, she asked permission to address me directly. The judge allowed a single statement. Tessa said, “I did not run from you. I ran the perimeter.” Then the feed ended.
I did not wipe my face. Generals do not perform relief for galleries. Inside the uniform, something that had been locked since the airport car was found finally unclenched.
