Chapter 4: The Morning After

By 6:45 a.m., the snow had stopped, but the sky remained heavy and gray. Claire stood at the kitchen window with a fresh cup of coffee, watching the plow trucks move slowly down the street. She had not slept. She did not feel tired.
Her phone had been quiet for the last hour, but she knew it would not stay that way for long.
At 7:12 a.m., Margaret Hale called.
“They’ve frozen the main accounts,” her lawyer said without preamble. “Both personal and the ones tied to the company that Victor controls. The FBI has already issued a temporary hold on the shell company as well. Victor tried to make a withdrawal at the airport ATM around 5:30 a.m. It was declined.”
Claire took a slow sip of coffee. “How did he react?”
“He caused a scene. Airport security was called. They didn’t detain him, but they documented everything. The FBI is monitoring his movements.”
Claire nodded even though Margaret couldn’t see her. “And Olivia?”
“She’s still with him. They’re at a hotel near the airport now. Victor has been making calls nonstop since 4 a.m. He’s trying to reach his lawyer, his accountant, and several board members. No one is answering.”
Claire was quiet for a moment.
“Keep me updated,” she said finally. “I don’t want to speak to him directly.”
“You won’t have to,” Margaret replied. “That’s what I’m here for. But Claire… he’s going to get desperate soon. Men like Victor don’t handle losing control well.”
After the call ended, Claire walked through the house slowly. She stopped in the living room and looked at the framed photos on the mantel. There were pictures from their wedding, from vacations, from company events where Victor stood in the center while she stood slightly behind him. She had spent years positioning herself in the background of her own life.
Not anymore.
At 8:40 a.m., Victor called again. Claire let it ring. This time he left a longer voicemail.
“Claire, I know you’re seeing this. Stop playing games. The accounts are frozen. Something’s wrong with my passport. I can’t access any of our money. Call me back right now. We need to talk like adults.”
She deleted the message.
By mid-morning, the first snow had melted from the driveway. Claire stood at the window and wondered how long it would take before Victor understood that the woman he had called useless had been preparing for this moment longer than he had been planning his escape.
She was not in a hurry.

She had already won.
She was simply waiting for him to realize it.
