Chapter 2: The Photograph

The photograph was grainy, taken from behind a half-closed curtain at his mother-in-law’s house. The woman in the image wore sunglasses and a scarf pulled low over her forehead, but the scar on her chin was unmistakable. The same scar Gavin had kissed a thousand times during their marriage.

Lila Cole.

The woman the state said he had beaten to death and left in their living room five years earlier.

Gavin stared at the picture until his vision blurred.

“How?” he whispered.

Chloe’s small voice was steady, as if she had practiced the words many times.

“Grandma told me not to tell anyone. She said Mommy had to stay hidden because bad people were looking for her. She said if I talked, they would hurt you worse.”

The social worker tried to intervene, but Warden Mitchell raised a hand.

“Let her speak.”

Chloe continued, her voice small but clear.

“Mommy came at night. She hugged me and cried. She said she was sorry she couldn’t be my mommy anymore. She gave me this picture so I would know she was real. She said one day I could show it to Daddy if I was very brave.”

Gavin’s shoulders shook with silent sobs. Five years of screaming his innocence into concrete walls had not broken him the way this single photograph did.

Mitchell looked at the image again, then at the guard.

“Get the governor on the line. Now. And someone find Lila Cole’s mother. I want her in this building within the hour.”

The machinery of death row, built for certainty and finality, suddenly found itself reversing direction.
