Chapter 12: The Confrontation

Sophia looked expensive even in a quiet West Virginia bakery. Cashmere coat. Perfect hair. The same composed beauty that had once made people underestimate how sharp she was underneath.

She closed the door behind her and smiled faintly.

“You look tired, Elena.”

Elena remained behind the counter.

“You look comfortable wearing a life that was never yours.”

Sophia’s smile sharpened.

“You left. Someone had to stay and keep things from falling apart. Marco needed stability. The family needed a version of the story that didn’t make us all look weak.”

“You staged that night,” Elena said. “You made sure I walked in at the right time. You made sure I saw exactly what you wanted me to see.”

Sophia did not deny it.

“You were always too sentimental to hold a man like Marco. I did what you never could. I secured him. I secured the position. And for three years, it worked.”

Elena’s voice stayed low.

“Until he found me.”

“Until he found the children,” Sophia corrected. “Do you have any idea what those twins represent? Bloodline. Inheritance. Leverage. You hid the one thing that could undo everything I built.”

There it was. Not sisterhood. Not jealousy in its simple form. Ownership.

Sophia took a step closer.

“I’m not here to hurt them. I’m here to take them somewhere they belong. You can disappear again if you want. That part was always your talent.”

Elena looked at her sister and felt the last of the old grief harden into something colder.

“You’re not touching my children.”

Sophia sighed, as if disappointed by a predictable answer. She lifted her hand slightly.

The SUVs were moving in.
