Chapter 3: The First Night

Mr. Meyers arranged for a locksmith before evening. Every exterior lock was changed. The garage code was reset. A temporary security presence remained at the end of the driveway until morning.

I made a simple dinner while Lily and Noah stayed close, doing homework at the kitchen table without being asked. They were unusually obedient, the way children become when they sense the ground has shifted and they are trying not to cause any more tremors.

After they were in bed, I sat at the dining table with the full set of documents Mr. Meyers had left me. The inheritance was real. The trust language was airtight. Whitmore Tower’s majority shares were already being transferred into my name. The house had never belonged to Daniel, not for a single day of our marriage.

I also found the copies of papers I had signed years earlier—documents Daniel had told me were tax-related. One of them had given him temporary signing authority on a joint account I no longer used. Another had allowed him to list the house as a residential address for business purposes. Nothing had transferred ownership. Aunt Margaret’s trust had seen to that.

My phone lit up with messages from Daniel.

We need to discuss this like adults.

The kids shouldn’t be in the middle.

You’re reacting emotionally. Let’s talk in the morning.

I muted the thread and sent a single reply through the new email address Mr. Meyers had advised me to use:

All communication regarding divorce, custody, and property will go through counsel. Do not contact me directly again.

Then I turned off the phone.

I walked through the house once more before bed—locking windows, checking on the children, pausing in the doorway of the master bedroom I would no longer share. The pearl earrings Vanessa had been wearing were still on her ears when she left. I did not care. They were only earrings.

What mattered was that Lily and Noah were asleep under a roof no one could take from them.

And that Daniel finally understood the house he had tried to claim had never been his to give away.
