Chapter 14: A Place to Stay

The first place that felt less like a hideout and more like a beginning was a small furnished flat nearer Adrian’s work, approved through temporary guardianship conditions and monitored with enough oversight to satisfy the state if not the paternal relatives still circling for weakness.

Mia inspected every room like a skeptic.

Windows.
Exits.
Locks.
Which floorboards creaked.
Where Leo’s crib stood in relation to the door.

Only after that did she let herself notice smaller things: the fridge with actual food, the bed with both a clean blanket and a second one folded at the foot, the way Adrian knocked before entering any room she was in. Trust remained expensive. He paid in consistency rather than speeches.

Leo adapted faster. Toddlers had a ruthless practicality about warmth and regular meals. Within days he was reaching for Adrian’s sleeve as often as Mia’s hoodie string, then looking back to Mia for confirmation that the new arrangement was allowed. Each time she nodded, something in her face pinched—as if sharing even a fraction of Leo’s reliance hurt and relieved her at once.

Mara continued the search for Elena. Tips still came in thin and mostly useless. The paternal family was forced into slower legal channels after their subcontractors’ pressure tactics became part of the record. None of that returned Mia’s missing adult. None of it undid the grocery store floor where a carton of milk had almost been the limit of what the world would give her.

But one evening, as city light faded across the kitchen table, Mia stood on a chair to put bowls away and said, almost casually, “We can stay tonight, right?”

Adrian looked up from the temporary custody papers he was rereading for holes.

“Yes.”

“And tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

Mia nodded once, as if filing the answer into a ledger that had been empty too long. Then she climbed down, checked on Leo in the crib, and adjusted the bracelet so the charm sat comfortably against his skin.

A place to stay was not the whole solution.

It was the first solution that did not require her to disappear by morning.
