Chapter 11: The First Holiday

The first real test came with Thanksgiving.

Claire sent a carefully worded message two weeks before the holiday, inviting us to the family gathering and noting that Patricia had “agreed to keep things light.” Michael followed with a similar note about the importance of the children seeing their cousins. Neither message acknowledged the parking garage. Both treated the boundary as something that might simply soften under the pressure of tradition.

Daniel and I discussed it that night after Mia was asleep.

“They’re trying to act like it never happened,” he said.

“Yes.”

“If we go, even for an hour, it tells Mia the rules change when it’s convenient.”

“I agree.”

We declined in a short, clear reply. We offered to arrange a separate visit with Claire’s children at a park on neutral ground. Claire did not respond.

On Thanksgiving Day we made a small meal at home. Mia helped mash potatoes and set the table with the slightly crooked napkin folds of a six-year-old taking the job seriously. Daniel’s parents’ absence sat in the room like a piece of furniture we had decided not to move. It was uncomfortable. It was also honest.

After dinner Mia fell asleep on the couch between us, one hand resting on Daniel’s arm. He looked down at her for a long time.

“This is the first holiday I haven’t spent with my mother since I was born,” he said quietly.

“I know.”

“It feels worse and better at the same time.”

I nodded.

Some losses were necessary. That did not make them weightless.
