Chapter 9: The Confrontation at the Wing

The white, clinical corridors of the medical center’s trauma wing were completely dead silent at 2:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Ryan Miller stood inside the central administrative lounge, his tailored overcoat immaculate, his jaw locked in a display of unyielding entitlement as he attempted to verify his family's frozen credit lines via the facility terminal.

The heavy glass entry doors burst wide open. Two state police detectives strode down the hall corridor, accompanied by four armed uniform officers. Behind them, Eleanor Vance walked past the reception desk holding an official federal containment brief.

Ryan staggered backward against the central diagnostic console, his face draining of every single trace of color as the steel cuffed links clicked loudly around his wrists before he could execute a single defensive call to his mother’s legal proxies.

"The transaction loop is permanently closed, Ryan," I said, stepping into the lounge from Lily’s adjoining high-security suite, my voice dropping into a clinical, mechanical register that completely frozen the air. "Vanguard's forensic security committee successfully matched the digital signature key you used to overwrite the campus surveillance cameras. The encrypted telemetry files recovered from the Delaware server array have already mapped your frame to the science building courtyard intersection at exactly eleven-fifteen."

Ryan stared at me, his eyes wide with a combination of visceral terror and breathless, frantic panic as the officers pulled him toward the exit turnstiles. "Daniel... wait... it's a structural misunderstanding... the audit deficit can be balanced out of court..."

"The balance sheet is closed, Ryan," I replied quietly. "Take him down."
