Chapter 6: The Weight of Silence

Celeste had never known silence could be so loud.

For three days, Adrian Cole had not answered a single one of her calls or messages. Her father’s company was bleeding. Two more suppliers had terminated their contracts overnight. The bank had scheduled an emergency meeting for the following morning, and Richard Monroe had already started drinking heavily again.

Celeste sat in her father’s office, watching him pace back and forth like a caged animal.

“This is Adrian Cole,” Richard said for the tenth time. “He’s not just freezing accounts. He’s systematically cutting off every oxygen supply we have. Suppliers, investors, even the goddamn cleaning company we use. Who the hell moves this fast and this quietly?”

Celeste stayed quiet. She knew exactly why Adrian was doing this.

Richard stopped pacing and looked at her with something close to disgust.

“You had one job, Celeste. Marry the man. Secure our future. Instead, you pushed his daughter into a fountain like some spoiled brat at a birthday party.”

Celeste’s face burned.

“She was in the way—”

“She’s a child!” Richard snapped. “And now because of your ego, we’re weeks away from losing everything. Do you understand that? Everything.”

Celeste stood up abruptly.

“I’ll fix it,” she said.

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You already tried. He won’t even speak to you.”

Celeste grabbed her coat and walked out without another word.

That evening, she drove to Elena Cole’s small house on the south side. She had found the address through a private investigator. It was a modest two-bedroom home with a small garden in front. The paint was old, but the flowers were neatly kept.

Celeste parked across the street and waited.

At 6:40 p.m., Elena came out wearing a simple cardigan, carrying a small watering can. She moved slowly, carefully tending to her flowers as if the world outside wasn’t falling apart.

Celeste got out of the car and walked toward the fence.

“Mrs. Cole,” she called out.

Elena looked up. There was no surprise on her face, only quiet disappointment.

Celeste stopped at the gate.

“I need to speak with Adrian,” she said. “Please. My father’s company is collapsing. People are going to lose their jobs. I know he’s doing this because of what happened at the party. I… I made a mistake.”

Elena set the watering can down and walked closer to the fence. She studied Celeste for a long moment.

“You didn’t make a mistake,” Elena said calmly. “You made a choice. You looked at a nine-year-old girl and decided she was beneath you. You put your hands on her and laughed.”

Celeste opened her mouth, but Elena raised a hand.

“I don’t hate you, Celeste,” she continued. “But I also don’t pity you. My son has spent his entire life protecting that little girl. You humiliated her in front of hundreds of people. Now he’s protecting her the only way he knows how.”

Elena’s voice grew softer.

“If you want this to stop, you need to understand something. Adrian didn’t become who he is by being soft. He became who he is because the world tried to crush him when he was young, and he refused to stay down. You picked a fight with the wrong man.”

Celeste felt her throat tighten.

“Is there anything I can do?” she asked quietly.

Elena looked at her with something almost like pity.

“Stop calling. Stop showing up. And start preparing yourself for what comes next. Because my son is not finished yet.”

She turned and walked back into the house, closing the door gently behind her.

Celeste stood there for a long time, the cold wind biting at her skin.

For the first time in her life, she felt truly powerless.
