Chapter 6: Their Return

I learned what happened when they returned home from a single voicemail Daniel left at 9:47 that night. His voice was tight, controlled, the same tone he used when a business deal was going wrong.

“Claire. The locks are changed. There’s an envelope. Call me. Now.”

He did not leave a second message. Ava did not call at all.

I sat in the quiet suite with the phone on the table in front of me and did not return the call. Outside the window, the city lights of Denver glowed against the dark. Somewhere across town, in the house that no longer had a key for me, Daniel was reading the letter and looking at the evidence. Ava was probably crying again, or explaining, or already shaping the next version of the story.

I made tea. I opened my laptop. I answered two work emails I had been avoiding. Then I opened the black folder one more time and read the oldest entry—the science project accusation from January. The handwriting looked like it belonged to a different woman, one who still believed that patience would eventually be rewarded.

That woman was gone.

In her place was someone who had finally stopped waiting to be believed.
