Chapter 8: Immediate Aftermath

By evening the certified pages had outrun the guest list.

Connor’s posts vanished in a scrub that only drew more attention. Screenshots lived without him. Alyssa’s family issued a terse statement requesting privacy. Betsy’s accounts went quiet. Company counsel—already under Parker’s conflict notice—requested an emergency meeting with the trust officers. Voting authority had been revoked weeks earlier; now the public claims of heirship and ownership made the internal position indefensible.

I fed Brinley in the guesthouse and declined every call that was not Parker’s. He reported in short intervals: the wedding had not resumed; Connor had left through a service entrance; Alyssa had been taken home by her parents; two board observers wanted a formal briefing on the trust structure before markets opened Monday.

“You don’t need to attend,” Parker said. “I’ll present the instruments. The vasectomy record stays in the personal track unless he tries to litigate paternity theater. If he does, the clinic date ends it.”

“And the divorce?”

“We file our response this week. His petition assumed assets and facts he doesn’t have. We’ll correct the record. No rush to spectacle. The wedding already provided that.”

Brinley slept. I stood at the sink and washed a single bottle, hands steady. The hospital room, the papers against my face, the word burden—those images remained. They no longer sat in the same place as powerlessness. They sat beside a sealed envelope and a pavilion full of people who had watched Connor’s future collapse under his own signature.
