Chapter 14: Review Without Fear

The next court touchpoint was administrative, almost dull.
That dullness was the prize. A clerk stamped a continuance of the existing plan. No testimony about stains. No photographs of sidewalks. Nolan waited in the hall with a book and asked afterward if we could get fries. We could. We did. Ruth met us and said the fries were cold and ate half of them anyway.
In the car Nolan said, “It’s boring now.”
“Yes,” I said. “Boring is the goal.”

He grinned at the window. I drove the familiar route past the science museum road and the clearance-rack store that had once held a twelve-dollar shirt. The store had changed names. The fact of what happened in the courtroom had not. It simply no longer needed to be fed with adrenaline.
At home I wrote a lunch note about boring being a superpower and packed it under a sandwich. The good apple went in. The imperfect one stayed for me. Some traditions were allowed to survive prosperity of the small kind.
