Chapter 10: The Weeks After

The graduation photographs made their way onto the windowsill and into the group chats of extended relatives who had never quite known how to classify us. A few old friends from the hardware-store years sent messages after the video of the stage presentation found its way online. Most of them simply said variations of the same thing: that the girls had said out loud what anyone who had ever watched us already knew. I answered the messages with short thanks and did not dwell. The public sentence had been for the girls to give. The quiet continuation remained ours.

Ava started her first job. Claire began the graduate program she had talked about since junior year. June accepted a research position that required her to move two states away and then spent the week before she left reorganizing my kitchen “so you don’t live on toast.” They called on Sundays. They argued with one another over the phone in the same rhythms they had used since childhood. They still expected me to know which one needed silence and which one needed the long version of a story. I still knew.
